Would this be a popular feature? It is an interesting idea and it's not hard to implement.

Again, this is an interesting idea, but is it something that would be wanted all the time? I personally wouldn't find any use for this, but I can imagine scenarios where others would.
Please do voice your opinion on this.

Hmmm, interesting. Should I throw in this feature and make a 5.x-1.2 (now that 5.x-1.1 is out) before doing the Drupal 6 port?

Naw, porting modules to Drupal 6 is more important then new features! :-) .... It's also very easy to back-port features, if needed.
