Hi everyone,

I've been working with Drupal for a little close to two years now (and open source a little over two years) and I have come to love the Drupal CMS system. Most of my sites are now based on Drupal. Obviously there were reasons why I chose to work with Drupal mostly for its flexibilility and its large support community. Its really been great working with Drupal and I cannot help wondering how it all started (even though I've read the story behind Drupal and Dries, etc).

The whole Open Source Ideology is not just alien and amazing to me, but greatly rewarding. Its results and reach cannot really be measured.

Anyway, Drupal has been a great aid and help to me in pushing my business and career forward and I thought of how and what I could offer back to the community. Being a Nigerian and with the low level of exposure to Drupal and its support with the aid and support of a couple of friends, we have set out to establish what we have chosen to call the Drupal Nigeria Association and want to hear your comments.

The idea behind this whole project is to begin to advance the course of the Drupal CMS in Nigeria. Our website in support of this project is in development and will be announced soon enough. I envision the association not only advancing the course of Drupal in Nigeria, but becoming a major support to Nigerians using the CMS. I have also just announced the commencement of Drupal based lessons and training for interested participants in my immediate community. This I hope will be furthered as time and the future unfold.

What do you think? I'm just a bit careful about using the Drupal name (since its a registered trade mark). Are we breaking any rules or laws by registering this name or website with this name. I would also appreciate all you comments and advice, especially for those who have similar associations running for their countries or region. I will appreciate all your responses, they will in no small measure advice and determine our next steps. By this move I do not really claim to be a guru, but then my heart is with Drupal CMS, I've really spent quite some time with it and I intend to push further by shapening and sharpening my skills with Drupal development.

Thanks and Cheers to you all.

Hi,

I'm very interested in pushing forward with the Drupal Nigeria initiative. If you are hard-pressed for time, I could help with maintaining the DrupalNigeria.com website. In the meantime, I have started a blog on Getting Started with Drupal in Nigeria: Opportunities & Challenges.

http://drupalnigeria.blogspot.com

I intend to deliver a practical Nigerian perspective on harnessing the power of Drupal for profit & social change. I'll be willing to collaborate with Drupal enthusiasts in organizing meetups, camps, code sprints & probably a Drupal conference in the nearest future.

Sure! We have set out with building the DrupalNigeria Online Community. You can hookup and give us a hand. There are also advanced plans to host several Drupal Users Meetup's in major cities across Nigeria. Three locations are in the pipeline at this moment, namely;

  • Owerri.
  • Ibadan.
  • Abuja.

Comments and suggestions are welcome to the facilitators at DrupalNigeria.Com or obioma.anyanwu@gmail.com. Cheers.

Good to see you have gone ahead with this. There are a couple of initiatives going on and I think we all need to come together physically or most probably virtually to gather steam on this. There was a DrupalCamp event in Lagos yesterday (http://drupalnigeria.org), 9th October, and it definitely was a good attempt. Let us all see how we can grow this community. I'll definitely send you a mail on this. Cheers.
