I can chose the 16:9 widescreen setting in the upload form, but it does not "take" and reverts back to 4:3, cropping the video image from the sides. The video files are mp4 640 x 352, and played fine pre-update.

just committed a fix to this problem on the 5.x-dev version. please update your code and test it again.
