Upgrading from 5 to 6.1 - MY SITE IS A MESS!!!!

I just copied all the files over, and now there is a big mess

pointing my site to upgrade.php

i can not find that string in the settings.php file

$update_free_access = FALSE;. Change it to $update_free_access = TRUE;.

there is nothing like this in the settings.php file

what should I do!!!!!!

before upgrading from Drupal 5.x to Drupal 6.1

A) read UPGRADE.txt ?
B) remove all drupal 5.x files first ?
C) did you disable contributed modules ?
D) did you switch to a default theme ?

If the above were done:

did you:
A) run update.php after the new files were added ?

Also, it may help to know what version of Drupal 5.x was in use before you upgraded ?
The EXACT steps you took to upgrade ?

Lastly, you should never perform an upgrade without backing up your files and your database first. This should be common knowledge, skipping steps does more harm then good. Remember the golden rule, haste makes waste.

I have just copied the 5.7 over 6.1 files on my ftp and it works.
I did not switch to my dafault theme.

I have some modules like fck editor and video module, maybe it is called coolfilter, not sure

i ran update but could not find that string to set to FALSE

it does not exist there

the site works again, thanks god

i dont know if I should upgrade at all

in future,

contributed modules should be disabled. This is because from one major verison to another contrib modules also need to be updated to Drupal 6. That said, Drupal 5.x modules won't work on Drupal 6.

Themes also have to be updated from one major version to another. Drupal 5.x themes won't work with Drupal 6.x. Which is whyu you should always switch to a default theme before you upgrade.

you don't need to set anything to FALSE to upgrade. Not sure where you are getting this information from.

Before you remove your files, you should log into your site as the first created user to insure that there is a session that is set up so that after the files are replaced, you can then run update.php
