I tested GCG just now, and it is much better than location since it lets you type in an address and show it on the map. It is possible to do that in location, but it only works for addresses in the US. GCG works for all countries where google has data, you also need to patch the code to have an interacitve map for mapping the addresses you write in!
It is worse than location since it doesn't offer views integration, thus I can't use it with node relativity to create maps with many points on them like I can do with location.
Views support for GCG is under development, I learned.
The link you sent me is exactly the patch/addition which is cumbersome for location/gmap. I tried it (a while ago, december, I think) and I had to patch and it didn't work out of the box; the javascript gave up.
GCG mapped Norwegian addresses out of the box, has less clutter in the submission form than location has, gmap is supported without two extra modules and patches. Extra patches is to make the location submission field drop an unused table element, put in extra css to make it fit within the width of the website etc, etc. There even is, if I recall correctly, an issue called something like "Collection of patches to apply" for it. I think that says it all.
I would drop locatin/gmap in a flash if views was ready now. Unfortunately it isn't so I have to let my client do with just placing markers in a map instead of typing in name of the location as is possible in GCG.
Actually, I hope this will spur some competition, both in UI look and feel as well as actual features. I'd love to be able to use yahoo or microsoft mapping as well. And geonames module support for both modules would be cool as well.
Some competition is needed in the mapping field, and until GCG lets me make a view which shows nodes as points on it which can be clicked for more info like in location/gmap, I'll stick with location/gmap.
Location module is being developed by BDragon & co to get it up to scratch.
It IS actually possible to do an address lookup with Location & Gmaps - but it requires a patch. Location, for me personally, is a pretty good solution and I personally find it slightly "annoying" when people generate almost clone projects rather than helping the existing project maintainers make their modules better by supplying patches and the like.
YMMV, but the patch didn't work for me last time I tried.
I do agree that it is annoying with a lot of modules doing the same, but I also see that there are a lot of consolidation over time. (See some of the video/media modules out there, and also some gallery modules).
(EDIT: I removed two paragraphs that were inflammatory)
Who knows, perhaps GCG-maintainer tried patching and fiddling with location and just thought: "I could do this just as well or better"?
Location managers deserve a lot of kudos, they are active and very community oriented. And as I said, I use the location module, and since the site is in production I'm not going to change to something else. But GCG blew just worked out of the box. Of course the taxonomy stuff in location, the views integration etc. makes the choice easy for those who needs to get a site going now.
BTW, have you noticed the http://drupal.org/project/home? It also has a mapping client built in, it also worked out of the box in a way which gmap/location doesn't. Obviously it is a yearning in the community for something that works out of the box.
It took me almost 10 years of programming to get over that urge, and to just settle with what works well enough out of the box and leave it to younger guys to do the grunt work ;)

........ a.s.o.........
I tried location/gmap but can't deal with them...... so this is my first "patch" for that package.....
Other:
Yahoo and Microsoft maps will be supported by this project, when Yahoo, Google and Microsoft publish a "Common Map Standard" and all of them implement it, and switching between their solutions comes as easy as to change the domain in the API source request.

summit commentedHi,
Doesn't location have this functionality world wide with the map_location module add on (http://drupal.org/node/165040)?

summit commentedNicolas, what Patch are you referring to?
May be you guys misunderstand each other. Is it the map_location module you are referring to?
And yes I agree, please integrate solutions. 1+1 can be 3!
