Drupal 6 vs. 5.7 ?

aopsftw - March 3, 2008 - 14:41

Hi,
I just upgraded to 5.7 and now 6 is out. Does it have more and better features than 5? Will I be able to upgrade as I did from 5.1->5.7? I am using freehostia.
Thank you in advance!

Hi,

Every new version of Drupal is an advancement. Yes, you can upgrade in the same manner, the important thing to check is if any contributed modules you have installed are also released for D6, It is important that you back everything up, especially your database, so that in the unlikely event that something goes wrong you can put things back like they were and try again. It is recommended that you not upload the new files to overwrite the old ones, rather remove the old folders first and then upload the new ones. make sure you at least have a copy of your settings.php as that has your database settings.

Good luck!

Don't do it in a hurry

6 has some nice features the main problem is that a lot of contributed modules like CCK and Views are not available for 6 yet.

Thanks!

Thank you for your responses.
I only have webforms and privatemsg installed so it shouldn't be much of a problem.
When I upgraded to 5.7, it was the day before 6 came out XD, I read the upgrade txt file like 100 times so I did everything correct and it works like a charm. I'll backup every file there is in that directory (Plus the database stuff). I have one question though, does 6 allow you to use SMTP for mail? That would be the only way as I am using Freehostia.
Thanks again!

Unfortunately there is no smtp functionality built into D6 and the smtp authentication module yet for D6. :-( If you want to be able to send email from your drupal sites, you should stay with 5.7 until this functionality is available for D6.
