It takes very long to load the tabs - about 5-10 Seconds in my installation. This should be improved.

Hm, try the latest development snapshot (allowing drupal.org to do its thang first!) or checkout the HEAD using CVS. The last tarball was a bit of a half-breed between two commits.

If the problem's still there, I really don't understand. jQuery kicks in once the DOM is ready, so you shouldn't experience as much as a flicker - at least when the JS and CSS is cached.

I should also point out that the vertical tabs only work in the Garland and Minelli themes.
