Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of upgrading my website from Drupal 4.7 to Drupal 5 and giving it a general overhaul. I'm going to have to move hosts because my current hosting company does not support mod_rewrite module and the ability to use local .htaccess file.

SITE INFO:
* The site -- an online music magazine -- is UK based, but 70% of our readers are US based.
* We get an estimated 50,000 unique visitors monthly but I'm hoping this will rise.
* I'm a Drupal novice -- if the hosting company makes changes to servers, which effects scripts and stuff, I will need to seek expert help to correct these
* We currently have just under 1000 nodes, although file size is fairly small for each.

HOSTING REQUIREMENTS:
* Good support (ideally 24 hour online)
* Who knows Drupal -- ideally a hosting company with formal ties to the Drupal Association or something.
* Whose servers can handle the traffic of a site like mine.
* I was initially thinking they would need to be UK based, but perhaps if the bulk of my traffic is from the US I should be thinking about a host over there? If so, good online support is vital.
* Reliability (!)
* Budget - less than £10 / $20 per month

I've been with Fasthosts who completely dropped the ball a few months back -- all passwords were reset with no warning and my site was down for 4 or 5 days -- so in a way things can only improve.

I've been trawling the review sites, looking on here, and at a few companies in particular, but there's just so many unreliable "reviews" that it's difficult to know who to entrust with the future of my website.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of a good hosting option?

Cheers,
Dave

I've been looking around, and found a UK based company. http://www.nativespace.co.uk/uk/hosting/web_hosting/index.html.

I can't say whether they are any good, but they do have fantastico, which will install Drupal 5.3 automatically for you. These are the questions I asked:

> Will I have control over .htaccess / cron jobs / root access ?

Indeed you have full control over .htaccess and cron jobs. You do not get root access to the server for security reasons, but root access to your hosting space is included.

> What version of Drupal is fantastico installing?

Version 5.3

> What version of PHP and MySQL are installed?

Apache version 2.0.63
PHP version 5.2.5
MySQL version 5.0.45-community

I'm still building my site, and have yet to find a place for it. But I think I'm going to go with these guys. Hope this helps.

It certainly sounded like a good deal and looked like a professional service, but I couldn't find much on the web in terms of feedback from users plus the traffic ranking of their site was surprisingly low. These things haven't put me off completely though so please do let me know how you get on if you decide to go with them.

It's heartening to know that others have been trawling through these and other forums, trying to find their way through the affiliate links and ethically dubious recommendations. I guess ultimately the only way to truly find out is to take the plunge with a company and see how it works out...

Its not that Drupal friendly - fixed php memory limit at 16mb. I couldn't even install Views. I'm sure its great for other sites.

I had much better success with eUKhost.com which use cPanel and have Fantastico scripts. I'm now using DrupalValueHosting who seem to have servers in the US. Its cheap and cheerful - extremely fast. But others in this Forum have security issues with it - it is, after all, a start up with absurdly cheap prices.

I have been using http://www.resellerzoom.com for more than a year. Prices are fair and they have UK located servers too.
