How can we use jQuery Update and UI 1.5?

I noticed you recommend we use jQuery Update and UI 1.5 now but I don't understand how. UI 1.5 required jQuery 1.2.3+ but with Drupal 5 we cannot upgrade to 1.2.x without breaking core.
