While discussing the shortcomings of gettext and alternative i18n/l10n systems/method for software in #drupal-denmark, we could agree on one thing: Having strings be more specific would help a great deal towards avoiding translating two strings that are the same in English, but turn up rather awkwardly in some situations with the target language (one example is Online/Offline, which is used both for users and for the entire site - in Danish, the site online/offline is translated to activated/deactivated... and using the same about users is amusing at best :)).

So what we want is something like Site Maintenance's Online/Offline become "Site Online/Offline", stuff using "Options" should use "Module Options" (or something like that), and in general make the strings more specific.

I'll second that.

The more plain and generic the original string is, the harder it is to translate it properly...

Title: More specific user interface text (for the translators' sake!) » DROP Task: More specific user interface text (for the translators' sake!)

Added this as a DROP task. :)

First part of the original post is more a guideline for ui text than a specific solvable issue.
For maintenance mode, currently the option is a checkbox labeled "Put site into maintenance mode ", which is quite specific.

Continued work here: #666170: Make texts on maintenance mode shorter and clearer
