If I set my filesystem to private with the private directory as /web/drupal5_private, I get the following message when uploading a video:

rename(/var/www/html/drupal-5.3//web/drupal5_private/KB-Entry-SC-1.mov,/var/www/html/drupal-5.3//web/drupal5_private/529_KB_Entry_SC_1.mov) [function.rename]: No such file or directory in /var/www/html/drupal-5.3/sites/all/modules/flashvideo/flashvideo.module on line 1464.

If I set the filesystem to public and set the directory as a subdirectory of the install root, i.e. /var/www/html/drupal-5.3/files, then the upload seems to work file.

Why does flashvideo prepend the install path into onto the destination filename? Seems like this is unnecessary. Thanks in advance for any tips and clarifications on how to get flashvideo module to work with a private filesystem.

There is a hint in the developer's web on this. If you use a private file system, you need to create a dummy node with the player attached to it. It will then work. Go check the developer's web page.

I don't think this has anything to do with uploading a dummy Player.swf to your site. The error shows that the flashvideo module cannot properly rename a file if it is in a private files area outside of themain drupal domain directory. This seems like a bug that needs to be fixed, as js1 has already acted upon.
