Move to OpenID support:
From the description it sounds like little needs to be done to push current cross-Drupal login and LiveJournal login to OpenID support.

From what I can tell OpenID support would entail providing a OpenID server which would authenticate people to their Drupal website as well as providing login via OpenID with a consumer library.
It seems that most of the PHP codework has been done over at http://xprofile.berlios.de/
Although it appears that the consumer PHP library is incomplete according to this statement at the OpenID wiki. http://www.lifewiki.net/openid/OpenIDConsumers
"Work is underway on a PHP consumer, though there are some issues to resolve with the signature verification."
I would like to help this process along as much as I can but I'm a pretty novice coder. I thought I'd at least add this information to possibly push people in the right direction.
