Short of altering the code in the forum module is there any way I could add a submit button alongside the preview button when adding a topic or comment to a forum, ie. so you could post without previewing?

as i understand things, this is a permission setting in site setup - you can allow users to post content types and require or not require a preview (make preview optional) and you can also do the same for comments within each content type. or maybe i'm misunderstanding your question, but i think i get it - this is a core permission setting in admin / post settings (same place where you set length of teaser)

I was actually only having this problem with comments and you can change this setting for comments in admin/content management/comments/settings. Thanks for your help zilla.

If you can't find this option in the above location

go into comment types > forums and configure it there.
