If you do not one a bloated gallery module, try Lightbox V2 and add bunch of photos on every node (will serve as album). Can use Book to create hierarchy.

This is Drupal 5, and currently unreleased, but I've been thinking of porting it to Drupal 6 and releasing it. I'm not sure the community needs yet another image gallery module, but if there's interest I could put some finishing touches on this and release it.

Image module comes with a working image_gallery module. There are also various other combinations. The difficulty is that there is not one single vision for an image gallery.
So, the suggested image gallery looks clean and nice and would probably be a good addition for the community.

Thanks for the feedback. I will see what I can do this week. I don't see my gallery module as competing with the much more powerful and flexible image module (or the other image gallery solutions I've tried). What I've created I've intended more for portfolios and simple gallery presentations. My main concern is that I don't want to confuse those new to Drupal, but perhaps with a proper description of what my module is (and isn't) that won't be a problem.
Image Module For D6 Has A Gallery
If you use the Image Module on Drupal 6 you can create simple image galleries using taxonomy. Go to http://learnbythedrop.com/image to see an example.

I actually just created and
I actually just created and released a basic gallery called Simple Gallery for Drupal 6.x
It still requires some work with image nodes with CCK and other modules, but it brings it all together nicely.
I actually based a lot of this off of benshell's photography site. With a little tweaking and the correct imagecache settings, you can duplicate his gallery almost identically. I have done so on a few sites already and if you need some help I can answer some questions. Let me know what you think.
