On Red Hat Linux Enterprise.

I have gotten to the database installation page (3rd page). When I enter something incorrect, such as the wrong db name or incorrect password, I get the appropriate error message. However, when I enter the correct information, the page just reloads and asks me to enter everything again. No error or confirmation message. So I enter the information and again I am not sent to the next page when I hit enter. I'm in an endless loop with no errors (well, something is amiss)! The user credentials are correct, I can get to mysql through Zend and Putty.

i am running into the same issue. i was trying to get it to install on my laptop to play around. my stack:

xp pro sp2
iis 5.1
php 5.2.5
mysql 5.0.51

i found this article: http://drupal.org/node/106835 but i don't think there was a definitive conclusion.

i have not had problems connecting to the database via mysql administrator. i get no feedback saying an error happened (i did get that error, but then fixed it). i do, however, keep getting the "mbstring" warning. when i used the PHP installer, though, it wasn't available as an extension to add, and i noticed a whole bunch of settings in the php.ini related to mbstring which were commented out.

anyone have any suggestions? thanks!

legion, if I find out anything, I will pass it on to you through this thread, unfortunately nothing for now. Thanks for the link, you're right, even on Windows Server they have trouble pin pointing the issue. There probably is an additional read/write access issue on Linux?

I'm experiencing the same problem here, trying to install Drupal 6.1 on FreeBSD with PHP 5.2.1 and Apache. In addition, none of the fields in the form on this page are labeled (e.g. with "Database name", "Database username", etc.).
