1) A user has selected a "system avatar" from the list.
2) The user then change its mind and uploads his own image instead. The default user hook_user() now removes the current avatar, that is the global one (that shouldn't be removed!).

Sorry for the lateness in replying, I've been away for the last month.

Please find attached a patch should fix this issue. I've also committed it to CVS, so it should be available in the next dev release (available later today).
