Sometimes people come to this page through a search... If you are looking for documentation about Drupal, please start at the main Community Documentation page, and if you want to help with documentation, read this section.
Drupal documentation relies on volunteer effort
Everyone who edits or writes Drupal documentation is automatically part of the Drupal Documentation Team! The team is loosely organized, with a few volunteers who have stepped up to lead it. Check out the Documentation Team and Leadership responsibilities page for more information.
Documentation Team Leader
- Jennifer Hodgdon (jhodgdon). Contact Jennifer by filing an issue in the Drupal issue queue with component Documentation, on IRC (see Communications below), or via the Contact tab on her user profile page.
Documentation Coordinators and Mentors
Besides the overall team leaders, the Documentation Team relies on subject-area coordinators and mentors to help guide contributors. These people are listed, and their positions described, on the Coordinators and Mentors page.
Joining the documentation team
You need not apply to be a part of the documentation team. Once you edit or create Drupal documentation, then you're automatically part of the team. Go ahead and find a documentation page that you feel needs improvement or revamping and click the edit link at the top. Pages with lots of comments are often a good choice -- you can incorporate comments and clarifications directly (read more about incorporating comments). We also have a list of quick ways to improve documentation, and if you are logged in, you can use the documentation status/management page to find pages that need attention.
Some documentation pages are locked to editing. If you find one and want to edit it, read that page for more information.
To contribute good documentation, don't forget to review the Style, structure and guidelines section.
Communicating with the team
- IRC
- If you have a quick question about documentation, you can often find team coordinators and other contributors on IRC on channel #drupal-docs on irc.freenode.net. Other Drupal-related channels are listed on the Drupal IRC page, most notably #drupal-contribute (where many code and documentation contributors can be found discussing issues, patches, and development topics), and #drupal (general channel for all things Drupal).
- Documentation group on groups.drupal.org
- The documentation group communicates via the Documentation group on groups.drupal.org, which has forums and announcements.
- Issue queues and comments
- Use the issue queues and comments, not the documentation group, to communicate about actionable items (things that can be acted upon and completed, such as problems with a specific Documentation page, a need for reorganization, etc.):
- If you find a problem with a specific page in the Drupal community documentation, either edit the page to fix it, or add a comment explaining the problem, and edit to change the page status to "needs technical review" or another appropriate status value.
- If you want to discuss a larger problem or propose a major change to the Drupal Community documentation, you can use the Documentation issue queue.
- Issues related to documentation embedded in the core of Drupal itself are discussed in the main Drupal issue queue, under the "documentation" and "user interface text" components,.
- Home page news
- The Documentation Team leadership writes a quarterly "what's up with docs" post, published to http://drupal.org/news (where you can subscribe via RSS to find out what's happening with Drupal in general).
- Sprints and Events
- Members of the larger Drupal community organize many Drupal-related events, which often have a documentation component (especially if you organize one!). One popular type of event is a "documentation sprint" (basically a documentation work party), which can be in-person or on-line. If you organize a sprint, announce it on the documentation group page, and you may find this information on organizing a documentation sprint helpful.
- Documentation team block
- When you log into your account on drupal.org, do you have a "Documentation team links" block in your dashboard? If not, click on 'Add a block', and then enable the Documentation team links block.
- Larger Drupal community
- The Talk with the community page has information about communicating with members of the Drupal community at large.
