Finding the page under which you want to submit a new book page at Drupal.org is a real pain. It would be a lot easier if we would have a series of Ajaxy dropdown boxes that lets you select what branch you need for every fork-level in a dropdown select box. A bit like http://wimleers.com/blog/new-module-hierarchical-select but then with the boxes underneath each other.
so for Drupal.org the first box would only show:
-Getting started
-Customization - Tutorials, Snippets and HowTo
-Theme guide (Drupal 6)
...
the next box would then, depending on your choice in the first box show the direct children of that page
etc.
I don't know if this functionality already exists, if so it should be implemented on Drupal.org, if not I guess this should be a feature request for the book module.

mroswell commentedHere's a 15-second video of the CiviCRM approach to this. Think it would be great for handbook drop-down. (Scroll down to see the search box if the video is too big for the screen.)

mdupontYou agreed that Hierarchical Select is able to do just that (with a bit of theming), and it is not restricted to book parent selection. It is better to use this module.
