set block position per page

Hi,

Has anybody tried setting the block region on a per page basis? For instance, I want the user-login in the left sidebar on the front page and in the right sidebar on other pages. I couldn't find any forum topics or documentation on this, but I can hardly imagine being the first person who needs this.

If it hasn't been done before, what do you think would be the best approach?
