I'm doing my first Drupal Site. Very impressed with it so far, but there's so much to learn.

Anyway, my home page shows the summaries of the site's latest news stories. The summaries are too long and I'd like to be able to specify how long they are.

How do you do this?

Thanks for your help.

look into the <!--break--> tag. if you want more control, check out a contrib module like excerpt for 5.x (i believe the ability to explicitly specify a separate teaser is in 6.x core).

You can also use change the teaser lengths. It's located at
Content Management -> Post Settings

That's great. Both the break tag and the post setting stuff is very useful. Knowing that they're called teasers also helped me find more stuff on search.

The post settings has standard values and won't let you specify teasers shorter than 200 characters. Is there any way around that?

not without hacking core (not suggested) or building a custom module in some way

That's what I thought. Guess I'll have to do it in the template.

Thanks everyone for your help.
