Souds like you are looking for something like nodeaccess but that isn't available for Drupal 6.

node privacy byrole is available for 6.x but is depreciated.

So basically i'm out of luck right now because i'm using 6 argh. lol Well i guess my family won't be able to read my blog since i can't block content for them lol

node privacy byrole works for 6.x. Why not give it a shot? You can always switch later...
