to Drupal 6, I wouldn't add any modules to your current drupal 5 installation unless there already is a version of that module for Drupal 6. Modules have to match the version of drupal you are using. Of 5.x module will only work on Drupal 5, and a 6.x module will only work on Drupal 6.

If you see that there is both a version 5 and version 6 for the module you want to add, then feel free to add it, as the information you add with your version 5 will be upgradeable to your version 6 module without losing the data or functionality that module allowed you to create.

And yes, to use any module, it has to be where your Drupal installation is, which in most cases is on your server. Be sure to search about installing Drupal modules in the search box above because there are a few simple walk-throughs you can find there.

About the cost for an upgrade... I don't think anyone here would be able to answer that since it is a very uncommon request. You can probably offer a bounty that would entice someone here to do it and have better results.

Thanks for the answer.. A developer I was talking to today said I was using 4.7 and this would increase the cost of upgrading. I don't know how he would know since he had no administrative access to my site or server. Can a person tell just by looking at my site?

Could you tell me in your opinion how long (hours) it should take to upgrade a site like mine? www.yourgolfspace.com

I have no experience with the 4.x series of Drupal, as I came in to this with Drupal 5.

My thought is that depending on whether you are using core modules or if you are using a lot of contributed modules would be the biggest issue. If you had a customized module made for your site then that might be the biggest time waster. Also, the theme will most likely have issues in upgrading too.

So, honestly, I would have no idea what I was in for, and neither would anyone else I think, until they were knee deep in it and had access to your installation. Of course you can't really just trust any bum off the street with such access, so be sure to choose wisely and find someone you can trust with experience.

I think an experienced person might be able to tell you were using 4.7, because they might be able to tell some legacy items in your source code.

If you log in, and click the "administer" link, you will find a list there called "Logs" and under that a link that says "status report". Click that link and it will tell you what drupal version you have. If you don't have that link on your administer page, then you must be using an older version of drupal.

Let me know which version it says as I'm curious now. :)

someone else told me to check the checklog... so I guess its 4.x thanks for your answer

Recently I inherited responsability for and upgraded www.CliveJames.com which was a Drupal 4.7 based site (see http://OLD.CliveJames.com ) What caused the nightmares though was that it also was using old version of MySQL and the MySQL upgrade process kept losing all the foreign character set encode because of the change in how MySQL deals with extended character sets.

Also had problems with the theme and various functionality being written in very custom and un-Drupal ways, partly because a some of that functionality was only introduced later and at the time very few people new yet what the Drupal-way should be.
Regards

Upgrading from 5 to 6 was a hundred time easier in this case than the upgrade from 4.7 to 5.x. But then again if you have a simpler site with less pan-European content or not running on an old version of MySQL it could go as smooth as peach.

The simple answer is no (I don't think anyone would know without more detail).

It depends on what modules/themes/customizations (if any) and how large your site is.
Some modules/themes that you currently use might not have stable versions for Drupal 6.x yet.

See http://www.yourgolfspace.com/CHANGELOG.txt

Upgrading Drupal isn't a matter of flipping a switch. As others have mentioned, it depends on what modules you have installed and how customized things are. If you are using flexinode, that will add a lot of complexity.

the problem with the question is that there isn't enough information.

update the site to Drupal6, does this include updating the theme ? updating other modules ?
or is it just core ?

does the upgrade include doing backups for you, of your DB and files ?

figure on 100 - 150 bucks an hour to have a reputable drupal developer take care of it. I'm sure you can get it cheaper by posting in the paid services forum here on drupal.org and have just "anyone" do it.
