Hello all,

I have just recently completed a new web site and I would greatly appreciate any feedback that you have to offer. The website address is : http://collectivecolors.com.

This site uses mostly sprites for background images and anchor tag subclasses. This arrangement really reduces load times dramatically (press a some buttons when you get there to see what I mean).

Thank you, Derek Webb

I think it's really good. It reminds me of Trivial Pursuit, and I was wondering if that was on purpose, or just me.

It could really benefit from some images, as I think they'd give it some life and focus.

The background grey gets a bit boring if you have a largish screen and I was wondering if a gradient on it might help.

Other than that, top looking site.

Hello Richard,

Thanks for your suggestions.

As for the comment and question about trivial pursuit: I can see where you might make that association, however our logo's sections are not all equal sized like trivial pursuit. There is a particular meaning conveyed in that logo (hint: it has to do with color usage).

We have been considering adding a bit more graphics to the about section pages, but as of yet we are just researching our possible options. As for the gradient, that is an interesting suggestion. We may have to look into that sometime soon. Thank you again.

Best regards, Derek

I didn't think it looked exactly like Trivial Pursuit, just the colours and also the font were similar. It's pretty much impossible to do anything that doesn't share some elements with another design.

I think it's a good thing. It gives the site a similar feel of cleverness, mixed with playfulness. I'd even be temped to take the theme of games further, if you felt it fitted in with the sort of company you are.

That's an interesting possibility to be sure, however I don't know if I want to make the site too game like since we are trying to be a serious web design and application programming group. There is certainly room for fun though - but we can't take it too far or we won't be taken seriously....

The SendThemToMars.org menu item in lest column has popped out of the column(problem for div). You can manage it by adjusting the padding on lest column, but seem to me like you need to adjust right column too, in order to match the theme.
Its just my opinion that the header was colorfull but background color of both the side columns with white on main column make the site look dull(may be try another color combination, bit more flashy).
Use search 404 module http://drupal.org/project/search404 it will put some result into the search(search become more exiting). check the link above for more details.
I hope to see both side columns having same width than with different width.
Primary links where great and change in body color for change in primary link was fun.
Submenu on left side, with curved menu was great. Great job.

Cheers.

Thanks for the comments and review! I do have some questions and comments about your comments though.

Its just my opinion that the header was colorfull but background color of both the side columns with white on main column make the site look dull(may be try another color combination, bit more flashy).

Yeah the grayish color was used because it does not clash to terribly with any of the site color changes (blue, green, yellow, red) and as it is a dull color it does not distract the eye from the content section too much. I have tried having different colors before and I may try again sometime. I can sort of see where you are coming from when you say that the areas around the body look kind of dull with just the gray. There was another comment before this one that said something to that effect as well.

I hope to see both side columns having same width than with different width.

They are actually, its just that the left sidebar has no background. In the design I wanted to try to draw as much attention to the content areas as possible.

The sendthemtomars.org fits if one uses regular font sizes. I assume that you are using an enlarged font size. I may actually lop off the .com's and .orgs' so that we can get that extra bit of room...

Best regards and thank you for the review!

It seems like most of the comments that I receive here and through other sources seem to be pointing to the same deficiency: needs more spice (eye candy). I agree fully too with that assessment. We are looking into developing some graphics for the site as time goes on. We may use flex to add interactivity to the graphics and so forth so stay tuned... I imagine that we will release version 2.0 sometime in the near future.

One thing to consider about this project as it stands. It was created (from drawing board to public) in less than a month, so naturally it can still use plenty of improvement. And I really appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions. You have all been very helpful.

Too much Candy can be bad for you. Don't go overboard. You have a clean identifiable look, don't try and adjust it too often without good reason.

Hi Derek Webb,
We are not trying to discourage you just helping you to get better. It doesn't matter you create a site in one month or one day, at the end we need to make the end user feel good about our site. This is one of the site i been working currently.

This project has started yesterday. I have put 5hrs of work into it. Site is working, just need some more functionalities like youtube module, and a good slide show and the most important factor "Content" and i need to create a module to manage users too. If this site has any problem, no one cares, that I made the site up and running in 5 hrs. Its my duty to sort it out. So..... Don't feel bad about any comment. Learn from your mistakes.

Cheers.

Don't worry I'm not discouraged! Not at all, in fact I am rather happy that people have been able to point out a very specific problem time and time again while still appreciating other aspects of the site. This, I consider to be a good thing, since there is no guess work about what I need to do to achieve more refinement in the eyes of many viewers. I knew when I showed this site that it wasn't done. But it is a decent first "you might say alpha" release.

No, things can always be made better. Add something here, remove something there, re-work the layout (all this in a test site obviously), and other things can always be researched to see if they make the project better or worse.

All in all I am satisfied with the idea of the theme, but just about everyone I ask says it needs a bit more spice to make it look less dull. It's the gray background and lack of content level graphics that does it too. I have some ideas about what I can do for that, however I am currently working on a module so I will start to work on the site content graphics and researching new layouts and things after I have a working prototype of this module I am developing.

I really do appreciate everyones comments though.
