We have a students website in which we want to subscribe people for mails based on "roles".

So is it possible that admin can subscribe a whole role for a particular forum/node.

You can assign subscriptions to roles (for example under admin/settings/subscriptions/userdefaults/type), but these will only be applied at creation time of the user with that role.
