Is there a means of checking user input, and notifying user about errors on form submission?

Is there a way of checking CCK form submissions for errors and returning the form back to the user with the error highlighted?

I was thinking along the lines of using some code attached to a computed field and doing some kind of drupal_goto or drupal_set_message to notify the user. Are there any commonly used techniques along those lines?
