The pager code was originally written when drupal 6 was in beta.... a long time ago.

i have updated/simplified/reduced the code.

so does this mean that the pager buttons are supposed to work? I am still having issues with the pager buttons having the text "next ›last ⇥" and not going to the next page when clicked.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am closing this issue as a newly installed site with this theme displays the pager buttons correctly - and they work too.
