How do I install modules?

Drupal is installed and running smoothly. I have downloaded the e-commerce module, but I can't find installation instructions. It looks like I just plop the files and directories in my web root directory, but I'm not certain about this.

I've looked in the Drupal handbook and searched the drupal.org site.

from what i can remember the commerce module is a group of modules...and I would consider an "advanced" module in terms of setting up...probably best to start with a simple module to just to go through the motions once and get working before tackling the ecommerce one...which is a great module, but installing it is not as simple as dropping files in a folder..
