I first used the Slideshow module... but it contained an annoying bug: if users uploaded pictures with the same file name... the latest picture would be ok but all the previous ones would be missing...
Knowing so many people name their pictures 1.jpg 2.jpg.... this was a terrible problem.
We then moved to the promising CCK slideshow module... seemed to do excatly what we were looking for: have a nice slide show contained in a node... easy for end users to implement.
The problem is that this module has a few bugs and is quite instable.
we recently upgraded to 5.7 and for some obscure reasons the photos will not appear anymore.
Unfortunately this project is not maintained anymore and we are advised to use the Views Slide shows instead.
I had a look at this wonderful module which I will certainly use for other things...
However, providing a view, I really don't see how this module could create a slide show in a node with images coming from that node only.
Any enlightment on this would be much appreciated.
Also, willing to sponsor to get cck slideshow back on the tracks... if anyone is interesed :)

Views Slideshow
I had a problems building a slide show too, I tried Slideshow , Slideshow Box, Slideshow Creator and then Views Slideshow for hours upon hours but all failed me. I was about to try CCK Slideshow but there was something on the project page that said they would be stopping support for that module and encouraged us to use views slideshow.
I tried views slide show, that was another task because I didn't want to use a view, I needed a page node to display the slideshow content so I embedded the sideshow view in a page node. I did it for this page

Then I had to add all the images I wanted as a part of the slideshow to a particular taxonomy. It was stressing but worth it, now all I need to do to add an image to the slide show is create an image content type and add it to the slideshow category and it is added to the show on the front page.
