Akismet conflict-- mysql_real_escape_string error

I believe this is a conflict with the Akismet module at http://drupal.org/project/akismet, and I have cross-posted this issue there. Marked it critical, as opposed to normal, since Akismet has been around for quite a while and is widely-used.

With only core and the phpBBforum modules enabled, I get the following error on my admin/modules page when I enable Akismet--

warning: mysql_real_escape_string() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given in /home/sage/public_html/intexp/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 321.

I am running:
Apache 2.2.8
CENTOS Enterprise 3.9
mySQL 5.0.45
PHP 5.2.5
