Image Module: can not get drupal to see path to directory

my file system is /var/www/sites/all/files
my image paht is images
this directory is in /var/www/sites/all/files/images
my drupal site is deployed in /var/www
I can not get the image module set up to accept the path? Any fix short of redoing the whole site. Can tinymce be a conflict with image module?
Check Permissions
What are the permissions on this directory:
/var/www/sites/all/files/imagespermisssions are chmod 777
directory permissions.
