Just as an update we are in the process of rewriting the core functionality of the module to fix this sort of problem.

Any news on this one?

A possible fix would be to at least allow transcoding, but it's a poor one - of course.

I have a problem creating diffs at the moment but try this version of commentluv.module.
Now it doesnt cut the text when national characters appear but it gets replaced by ?.
I need to work on that, but it is better.

Btw: big fan you and your wifes blogs.

Try this one instead, just a little error on my part, now it seems to work fluently.

If you report that it works I will submit it.
