More File System Problems - Please Help!!!

Hi,

I've had some problems with public/private file system (my fault, I know) and I've now gone back to a public file system but I'm having issues.

Problem is that I can't upload and attach files to nodes. My test file is a PDF, 70k in size (no size issues), the file type is allowed (for the exact case), attachments are allowed for that content type, posting as admin with full permissions, but I just can't get the file to upload to the system.

I don't know how it is supposed to work, but I locate the file, click on attach, the file box turns to the striped uploading graphic, then it redraws but no file attachment is lister anywhere.

However, I also use the user_badges module which relies on the public filesystem facilities to work, and this is still able to upload files - so I'm leaning towards ruling out the problem at the file system side of things

I've tried every combination of paths I can think of, including "Reset To Defaults". I've even 777'd all the directories (only temporarily) and this has had no effect. I'm running out of other things I can think of trying!

Grateful for anyone with any suggestions as to how I might solve this, can suggest more tests to try, or configuration (or database settings) I might have missed,
