Take a look at a2hosting.com - I do not currently use them, but I called to ask a question about their service and got a really helpful and knowledgeable sales/tech support person...

Check out web hosting talk for some deals.

I'm using eleven2 which is under $10 a month for my sites listed below. (Eleven2 has some bad press but I haven't had many issues with them at all.) GeekStorage (haven't used) is at around $10/month.

($10 US is about the cheapest I'd pay for hosting, and I don't like those 1 or 2 year commitments.)

Looks like GoDaddy does the install/setup of Drupal 5.5 currently (Linux). I have had success with their hosting services in the past (I usually buy domains from them anyway, so I like to stick with my same account). Always seem to be ready to help if needed (at least in my experience).

I have seen some comments that GoDaddy would not give the Lock Tables permission required to run drupal without a work around.
Have they changed that or was that mistated.

kaffeen’s picture

Those permission issues were with *shared hosting services*. I guess if you want a cheap *shared* solution, GoDaddy may or may not be for you. I don't see anyone complaining about this lately, so it is possible they've changed their SQL management capabilities. Try calling them if you want a shared service and see if they give full permissions or not.

As always, if you have a dedicated server on GoDaddy, you will not have any problems. I only go with dedicated servers, so I've never encountered any problems such as this.

I have a test Drupal install on Godaddy shared server account - I think it is shared anyway. And it is really slow despite having virtually no traffic to it...

See http://www.f1m.info to see how slow.

Their shared hosting has limits on database hits and such (as do most hosting biz). As I said above, I don't have any experience with their shared hosting. I'm not a fan of shared hosting services (with anyone). Mileage may vary.

I find GoDaddy's hosting to be really painful to deal with. I suggest finding a good cPanel based site. (Hostgator and Bluehost are both cPanel.)

I recommend AN Hosting, I've been running a number of Drupal sites on them for over a year now. I wrote up a review if you're interested.

I recently switched to DVH ( http://www.drupalvaluehosting.com/ ) from 1and1.

I'm very satisfied with DVH's service and support and recommend them highly.

Slicehost.com will, for $20/month, let you set up your own Linux install exactly as you like it. 'tis spectacular!

Help me decide which company to switch too... Slicehost.com which is a VPS, or AN Hosting or Drupalvaluehosting.com

with Slicehost.com ... Is 200 GB BW,20 GB storage and 500 MB Ram good for moderatatly busy website
It looks like AN has the best offering for cheapest price in the shared category..

Most websites won't use 10% of those numbers. Generally, you want to base your decision on features, speed, and support. A VPS offers the highest level of customization (and possibly performance), but costs more, and requires you to know how to run, maintain, and secure an entire (virtual) server. With a (good) shared hosting plan, the server maintenance and security is already taken care of for you.

I recommend you take a look at http://www.hotdrupal.com/ I just recently switched over from Dreamhost to Hotdrupal and so far I have been very impressed. I had one support issue and they were all over it in no time. The response times are super fast and the prices are great. And no, I don't work for them nor am affiliated in any way.

Good Luck,

Josh
