Any understandable tutorials?

Are there any tutorials on theming that someone who is not in the developer team can read? I mean WTF? I made a page.tpl.php with an empty and it's filled with stuff including primary links which are in a region that's not even displayed. Where does it come? How can I modify what will be displayed?

Why can't I edit my posts?

Why can't I edit my posts? Anyways, I can type anything in page.tpl.php but drupal still prints out what it wants.

It would probably help if

It would probably help if you said what your goal is so people might be able to respond with ways that might be done with Drupal.

I agree, totally confusing!

I'm a designer very comfortable with XHTML and CSS, and OK with basic PHP, and I cannot figure out where to begin in designing a template.

I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll post my particular problem elsewhere, but the documentation here is horrible.

which documentation?

Odd how many people get along really well with what others call horrible, have you read : http://drupal.org/theme-guide/5 or http://drupal.org/theme-guide depending on the version of Drupal you are using ?

have you checked out any of the video casts and slides about themeing ?

have you checked out drupaldojo.com ? lullabot.com ? for more videos and tutorials ?

have you used google to find relevant information ?
