Im looking at making a website that will be similar to facebook. Is it possible for the drupal system to create a website like facebook? I know that will be a bit of modification that would be needed but how easy/hard would it be to do it if its possible at all.

This is not about whether Drupal can do this or not.

Please keep in mind that Facebook and Myspace already exist with huge development teams and are streamlined for their purpose. I'm not a big fan of seeing duplication on the web. So, please keep in mind of what you can offer that doesn't exist, and how to possibly leverage that with existing systems (sites).

The Buddylist Module is a good nice Basic module that you can use. This will definitely add some features of the Facebook or the MySpace, if not for all the features, as u mentioned cannot be done without any changes. Handling Invites and adding Friends becomes very easy.
