defaults don't work

Viewing Defaults don't seem to work (not taken as default), neither does changing them in an article when you have that permission.

I created a clean install:
deleted all rows from node_access, left the 'all' entry in table....
removed all traces from module in variables table......

Activated new CVS version (from today) correctly.

Set defaults for all types.

(npbr_ entries where created in variables table)

creating a new entry as regular user -> all was disabled)

Caching is disabled....

Any tips? Things to try?
