Basically, these are the sections & features I intend to have on the website:
• A good homepage for displaying news & articles, & that's capable of importing bits from different sections of the site;
• Simple but fast forums, suitable for a medical community, no smilies, no excessive text formatting or signatures are needed. With a reputation system working either by points or bars;
• A Questions/Answers page, something like Yahoo Answers, with a voting system if possible;
• A file management system for users to upload & share their documents & classify them in categories;
• An invitation system to expand the community;
• A simple Ajax-based chat system.
Are the above features doable with Drupal, for someone who's not that experienced in programming? Any input is appreciated.

Drupal is a practical
Drupal is a practical solution for ANY website and can without a doubt provide the features you subscribed. Since you're new, you will probably need some help getting some of these features working the way you want them to, but everything you described is certainly doable with Drupal.
Don't be too hasty
I definitely agree that Drupal would be an excellent choice for this website. In fact, Drupal is an excellent choice for probably about 90% of all websites.
But you should never say that Drupal fits all needs. It's like saying PHP is the only language to program in. Why else would this forum section exist, anyway?
my two cents,
Alan
