I am using user_profile.tpl.php for my profile page. Like here http://drupal.org/node/35728
I am positive that your profile page is better than the profile page provided with the Drupal default.
The modules that integrates in my profile page are private message, buddylist and some custom profile fields.
I am also using this method to show the profile avatar http://agaricdesign.com/note/theming-user-profile-pictures-drupal I need to show the large avatar on profile page and thumb on View Fields.

have you looked at the advanced profile module?
With it you can see the user's buddy list, threads he has participated in, and BIO information. It also give you a link to add the user as a buddy or send the user an IM. Ive implemented it on my beta testbed and have loved it so far. http://pf2beta.pokerfaction.com. check out my profile to get an idea how it looks. you need to create an account and sign in to see all the fields.
i also use advanced forum that theme's the forum very nicely and adds links to IM the user and add as buddy. i think those two modules would help you out a lot. Follow the instructions carefuly from the module's page because you need to install a bunch of other modules. I recommend using BIO as a helper module.

Nah, not a team. I've gotten a bit of help here and there, mostly with theming, but the majority of the coding is just me. That's why it's taking so long. LOL
Flatforum wasn't bad... Just hard to install. It was still a good start.
