I've enabled the statistics module, but damned if I can figure out how to turn it on. The doc (for Drupal 5) says to travel to Administer >> Logs >> Access log settings, but I can't find the equivalent for Drupal 6. For any article I click the "Track" button and it says "no statistics available".

Search for that exact text". And enable its sounting gizmos!.

in d6 the path is admin/reports/settings

Another option-- goto admin/by-module, find the statistics module, then click on the "access log settings" link.
