4.7.x to 5.x or 6.x
garyploski - April 10, 2008 - 13:58
I feel like I'm missing something in new installs of ver 5 and 6... Is there a way to import a 4.7.x sql database into 5.x or 6.x?
FYI - my install of 4.7.x was broken by fantastico and I'm having a very difficult time getting it up and running so I figured I'd go the cleaner route.
Thanks in advance.

4.7.x DB's won't work in Drupal 5.7 or Drupal 6.2 witouth the DB being updated.
your problem is more then likely being caused by using a FANTASTICO installation as a production site. Fantastico is great for testing scripts by changes they make in order to allow one click installs often cause headaches like yours.
use fantastico as a search term here on drupal.org to learn more.
read the drupal cookbook for some methods the author used to sort out fantastico installs by exporting the DB into a local machine and doing the updates to drupal on the local machine first. The navgiate away from fantastico.

How would I go about
How would I go about updating the database locally if I can't import it into 5 or 6 then? Version 4.7.x isn't available or supported anymore.

first thing would be to establish which version of 4.7.x is in use. check your CHANGELOG.txt file in the installation
then update to the last version of 4.7.x, which I think was 4.7.11 ? you'll have to check the downloads area.
then try to move to Drupal 5.x
again though, you should read the drupal cookbook in the tutorials section of the documentation area to get a better understanding of how to work around your fantastico installation. It is the only documentation I've seen where by the author tried to help those that have chosen the path you are on.
because you've lagged so far behind in updating you very well could run into some issues on top of the fact that you used a fantastico install.

Yikes... It was 4.7.5
I'm not a developer or one familiar with coding so this worries me to the extent of worry about how I'll go about just getting the site live again...
Is there anyone out there that has this type of thing setup and could help me convert the db to 5.x?
Side note -- I have the db
Side note -- I have the db saved to my computer.

Your local machine will have to be set up to acta nd react like a server environment. As developers do to write code for drupal where you can have your own Apache, PHP nad MySQL installations.
more on setting up a developing environment in the documentation area.

The site is here: http://garyploski.com/drupal/
Is there something obvious I'm missing that will not allow me to A- logon B- view one of the two links or C- access the admin section of the site?
I don't know how... But I

It wasn't easy to find the downloads but all is better now. The recovered version still isn't working (linked above) but that doesn't matter anymore. SWEET!
