Custom messages not sent

I am using the current Volunteer module with drupal 4.60 and the custom messages I set for individual events are not being sent to users when I approve them. Instead the default message is being sent in all cases. I have 9 events and in each case I set a custom approval and reminder message. However, when I approve volunteers, they get the default message that is set in the volunteer admin page under settings. Other than this, I think the module is great!
