For some reason my default roles has stopped doing the auto-assignment when the person registers. Is there some advice that I could get from you regarding what to do to get it working again. If not then is there something that I can do to see might be going wrong? Thanks in advance.

same here, I activated the role moderation, don't know if it's the cause.

Not sure either. There must be some issue with other contrib modules. I have since gone on to a different solution.
