Help a dyslexic Upgrade 6.1 installation to a 6.2

dolfrog - April 14, 2008 - 00:24

Hi
I am new to Drupal, and from my perspective the basic instructions assume too much prior knowledge, or make things too difficult for me to follow.
I installed Drupal 6.1 using my hosting services Fantastco option so I did not have to install it myself. I now need to upgrade to 6.2, but the upgrade instructions, for me, are incomplete leaving too many comprehension gaps, So i can not follow what is meant.
I can follow almost everything else after that in the guides etc. But it is all that code, much of which is meaningless to me.
My preferred route.
I can download the Tar files and use 7Zip to decompress the files and folders, I would then prefer to use Cute FPT to upload the files to my web hosting service. from the instructions provided I am now completely lost.
I can locate the settings.php to change the $update_free_access and i I can use my browser to run the update program I think.

But I need to fill in the gaps about where to initially install the files, do i have to create an installation folder/directory as one does not currently exist.

It would help if you could provide some examples for idiots like me.

best wishes

dolfrog

The biggest hurdle to get over will be that you used fantastico to install Drupal. Fantastico is great for testing but not good for production sites.

Use fantastico as a drupal.org search term to learn about some of the horror stories

after you get that far, feel free to watch a video or three http://drupal.org/node/128752

on upgrading in general, though none of them cover upgrading a fantastico installation. Since Drupal 5.x drupal has been as easy to install with its own installer then a 3rd party script.

you have not answered my question about the problems using Drupal installation instructions which are dyslexic unfriendly.

I would love to continue using Drupal but only if I can understand their installation instructions, in plain english with a few examples of what they are trying to describe.

I am having problems with the Drupal instructions and not Fantastco at the moment.

the reason you don't understand the instructions is because you didn't install the software on your own. You made the choice to install using fantastico, therefore you don't know where the database is located, you don't know where the files are located making the upgrade instructions foreign to you.

I happened to link you to a section of videos that would have answered these too, but since you've chosen to ignore that part

I'll answer your questions specifically, which won't exactly help you either, since you know not where your original files are located and there is no way for anyone to tell you where they are located because we can't see your server to understand your folder structure and because YOU USED FANTASTICO.

for a normal drupal installation ie: NOT fantastico because they may have chosen to alter some things to allow you to "one click" install.

step 1
set your site to offline mode in your administration area

step 2
back up your datasbase and Files DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP

step 3
delete all files and folders in your 6.1 installation except for the sites folder & files folder

step 4
upload all files and folders in your 6.2 archive except the sites folder

step 5
log into your site at yoursite.com/user and set the site back into online mode

step 6
run update.php

If you have my disability

dolfrog - April 14, 2008 - 00:51

when you have my disability which is an information processing disorder, which causes me to be dyslexic, you try too avoid using instructions you do not fully understand, and use alternatives.
For me Drupal instructions are like this site are difficult to navigate, so i try to find alternatives, and fantastico is one such alternative. not perfect as you mention, but it gets around the impossible.
If only the Drupal instructions could use the type of explanation you have just provided then may be I would not have had to ask for help in the first place.

The alternative I provided was a videocast.

My instructions are for a normal drupal installation. ie: not a fantastico installation. your mileage will vary as I can't insure they will work. I don't use fantastico to run production sites and neither should anyone regardless of disorder. Once fantastico is used you are pretty much on your own as you aren't using drupal as we know drupal you are using fantastico/drupal which isn't the same exact thing.

good luck!

I didn't know...

I had no idea what "fantastico" is, so I looked it up.

http://drupal.org/forum/fantastico-de-luxe

Pretty much a warning not to use it as it makes Drupal seem buggy.
