Hierarchy path tokens not working for top-level nodes

For nodes that are on the top level of the hierarchy (i.e. they don't have a parent), I can't seem to get any of the nodehierarchy-related tokens to work at all. Pathauto just takes them literally, resulting in page titles like "[fullhierarchytitlepath]", "[fullhierarchytitlepath]-0", "[fullhierarchytitlepath]-1", etc. Of course I have also tried other tokens besides that particular one. I'm positive this worked in some revision prior to the 1.0 release, since I had good aliases that were generated with those same tokens from before I installed 1.0.
