Community & Support

Anyone want to make a "Digg" variant of Drupal?

I'm not sure how many of you are aware of Digg.com.

Basically, its similar to Slashdot in that stories are submitted and moderated by the community. The difference is that the story itself on Digg is just a very simple summary and it links directly back to the article it refers to.

Its very simple, very elegant. Drupal would be suited PERFECTLY for something like this, it just needs a little work.

Anyone interested? I'd like to do something like this for my site, and I'm sure it would be great for the community as a whole.

Thanks

I just saw this

I thought the community might be interested or be able to use it as a starting point:

The downloadable code:

I'm no programmer, but the tar file includes php and sql files. Be curious to know if someone savvy is able to get it up and running and/or determine ways to hook it into Drupal.

I've created a drupal

I've created a drupal website similar in nature to digg (with tags) at http://www.startplane.com

I'd be happy to share the module if others would be interested (I can't make any guarantees about the "cleanliness" tho!).

BTW, I'm pretty sure digg is based off of drupal.

Hi Sabbat,Yes, I am

Hi Sabbat,
Yes, I am planning on adding the ability to only promote stories to the homepage if they get enough recommendations from the sub (tag) pages. I will be implementing tag clouds to facilitate this.

Right now I don't have enough users so it's not that big of an issue. (Feel free to post stories you find interesting for others to comment on). I'm trying to create a community news type website.

I'll make plans to package up the code and release a module once I add the additional features. I hope I can help create an open platform using drupal that alows users to blog and chat from any website to any other website using open apis.

I am very interested in this module!

Hi Startplane,

I would be very interested in getting my hands on such a module. This is exactly what I've been lookig for. Let me know if it's possible for you to send it to me.

Much thanks!

Which version of Drupal is

Which version of Drupal is installed here and also which tag module is this site running? awTags? folksonomy?

I'm also interested in this

I'm also interested in this digg-like module.

This is precisely what I have been looking for to extend Drupal for my purposes. I have been a long time user of Drupal and was affraid I was going to have to look at another CMS for the functionality I needed for a new project.

I really love what you have done here and would very much like to have access to the modules you have created.

I see no way to contact you through the Drupal site or your own. I do hope you will let us know should you release your code.

Thanks.

I agree

BTW, I'm pretty sure digg is based off of drupal.

I suspect the same. When I first ran across Digg Ithought 'nice to see someone succesfully using Drupal's moderation queue' :)

Also, to the original poster, isn't Drupal digg-like out of the box? What would need to be changed? I don't quite get what your after. They've added some bells and whistles, but drupal's got the moderation queue already built into the core.

I don't think a 'variant' (if you're meaning a fork) is a good idea personally.

Let users create articles in various categories. Have those articles go into the moderation queue. Others vote on it to be promoted to the front page. Is this not possible to achieve simply by correctly config'ing a stock drupal installation?

startplane? is ur site down??

Startplane?

i cant see u r site up & working..
is it down? can u enable it ?

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I've not actually used drupal before, but I'm essentially looking for something with digg.com fuctionality.

My php skills are very low, but I'm happy to help test anything that gets produced.

That looks great, from what I can understand of it! Anyone have the code they can send me? I'm doing a fundraising site for a nonprofit charity organization and we could sure use a good Digg plugin for Drupal. Thanks!

Yes lets make one

I think a digg module would be great. One step further, if the story gets promoted to your front page, how about if it auto-submits it to digg too. So it's kind of like a second filter for news to go onto digg.

Does drupal has a RSS enabled search like digg?

We can do better than digg!

Hey.

I'm interested in augmenting traditional news structures with democratic/participatory ones.

For this purpose, we can do better than digg.

I have an embryonic outline of a democratic/particpatory news system I have devised here:
http://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~gfcoppol/omnicentric/omni_brief.html

Here are two important differences:
1) Readers develop lists of people that they want to "associate" with. The meaning of the word "associate" differs given the application. For example, I could have a list of people whose "diggs" I want to pay attention to. That is, I can develop a list of people with similar interests, and who I trust to only digg quality stories, and only listen to their diggs.

2) The main way that news delivered is not by "diggs" of sorts but by "Portals". How it works is, you would have a list of "Portals". Portals are other readers who "recommend" stories. The difference between the Portal system and the digg system is that you see all the stories "recommended" by all of the people on your Portals list. The stories you see do not depend on a vote count or volume in any way. If one of your "Portals" recommends a story you see it. I think this is an advantage for several reasons. First, it's based on personal relationships, so you find "Portals" that you really like and see every story that they found important. When some "Portal" starts recommending a lot of drivel, you remove him from your list. Also, voter "fraud" (people digging stories they wrote with multiple accounts to gain more attention) will never be an issue.

Also, there are several clever mechanisms to allow Portals lists and the lists of to grow quickly and be edited to maintain quality.

The thing is, I was hoping to build a Napster-like client (instead of a web page) so that certain computations can be distributed to the computers of the readers. I don't know the relevant computer languages but I would be willing to learn them (I study mostly theoretical computer science at my University). Does anyone want to collaborate on such a project?

Good idea but why napster-like?

Robin Gower

This is a good idea that addresses the problems with digg that you mention (vote fraud and lack of qualitative digger ranking - i.e. all diggs are equal). I would be interested in collaborating.

I'm not sure why P2P technology is useful. The low barriers to entry into this sort of community-site are vital, requiring a client outside of the browser would surely put people off...

Vote up/down Package

Vote up/down Package at http://drupal.org/project/voteupdown for Drupal 4.7 (cvs) is an attempt to build a digg.com/reddit.com clone.

Demo site at http://vigillar.se/.

AJAX functionality is used for voting if the browser supports it (using drupal.js included in Druapl 4.7). Bookmarklets are supported for quickly submitting new story links. A number of RSS feeds are available.

Suggestions, bug reports and patches are very appreciated!

Looks cool

I like it.
Just a preference, I prefer the side-by-side controls. The above below (especially with the arrows) looks like it's a location control (allow the user to move content up/down the list).

EDIT: Now that I've played with it a bit, it's not so much the above/below vs side-by-side. I guess it's more the arrows as indicators. To me, anyway, they imply location control. I like the thumbs-up/thumbs-down (maybe it's the TIVO owner in me).

Also some alt-text would be helpful for the less tech-savy users.

Great job!

Good to here you like it

The function that generate the voting widget is themabel, you can also do a lot with only css and a change of images. The current look is from reddit.com.

If someone contribute alternative looks I will consider including them as options.

The lack of title text (that pop-up when you hover over the arrows) is due to how AJAX is implemented. Turn of JavaScript and you will get title text (Vote up/Vote down by default).

This is a drawback but the benefit are a clean and neat AJAX implementation that cause no problems for clients that can't handle JavaScript.

I'm trying to learn themeing/css

But for now, I just replaced your arrow images with thumbs up/down images. I've probably leaned enough css now that I could do it that way, but right now I need to look into the actions api/module so I can do some things based on the votes.

hi, i'm trying to see the demo site to decide if i should upgrade from 4.6 to 4.7 to install the up/down package. but i cannot figure out the math problem at the new user sign up because it is not in english. are there other demo sites i can see? thanks, erick

Swedish addition of positive

Swedish addition of positive integers closely follows the English style so you should do ok ;-).

Matematik-fråga: Vad är 3 + 10?:
Math question: What is 3 + 10?:

You answer by entering the sum, in this example 13.

When you have an account you can switch language to English.

http://drupal.org/project/voteupdown

tried your link http://drupal.org/project/voteupdown. nothing is there. can you tell me where i can down load the module? thanks, erick :-)

Try this

use this module

hi, i loaded this module. but i could not figure out how i can rank the news based on the number of votes instead of time stamps. appreciate if you can give me some hint. thanks, erick

Currently not available

The vote_up_down module does not allow you to rank the nodes by number of votes, but you CAN use it in conjunction with the actions module to automatically promote a node to the front page based on number of votes.

I question the pure value of ranking nodes by number of votes. Digg does not do this for obvious reasons. If you rank by number of votes alone, then old but popular articles will dwell at the top of the page for far too long. Digg uses a combination of node date, number of votes and other factors to rank posts.

To accomplish this, you might be able to use the views module. (I plan to experiment with it soon)

yes, if you figured out how

yes, if you figured out how to use view, please let me know. i tried views without much luck. i particularly like digg's two folder like view with "popular stories" and "upcoming stories" that user can toggle between the views.

i assume i can use voting_actions to do the "popular stories", and use the regular view for "upcoming". but not sure how to put both up there for people to choose from.

also, the "digg manu" is cool. not sure how to do it.

thanks,
erick

Digg like community with Drupal

I'm intending on doing a Digg like commuity for voting on weird videos on my humor site. Drupal looks a little overwhelming. I'm considering just doing it from scratch in perl since I probably wont need extensive features.

How difficult do you find using Drupal for a project like this?

There is a new module that enable you to do "digg" like voting system. http://drupal.org/project/drupalit

I saw their demo on www.renmenbi.com and it seems nice. So maybe that would help you guys to do what you intended to achieve.

thanks

patchak: i have finally figured it out. the problem was that i did not tick the first checkbox ("provide menu") and only ticked "provide menu as tab".

Another question

Patchak: May I bother you with another question: how did you set up the exposed filters so that they provide drop-down menus and not just fields? I could not find that information anywhere.
I want the user to be able to choose if he wants to see all nodes/nodes with rating >= -5/nodes with rating >= 0, etc.

Does anyone have any working

Does anyone have any working examples of this?

I want Drupal!

You would have to use the

You would have to use the cck widgets... (multi select as a dropdown for example)...Or simplt use the regulat taxonomy fields.

Thanks

I ended up using Javascript to toggle CSS display property for nodes with negative rating.
