Pathauto used to include a feature for "Index Aliases" which would make it so that a site with a URL system like "blog/2008/05/15/content-title" then it would show teasers of the content at "blog/2008" for content which had aliases that started with "blog/2008". There were some performance problems with this feature and, with the advent of Views it was no longer necessary.

This video from Drupal 5.x era shows how to create index aliases using Pathauto and Views. It is now out of date for Drupal 6.x though the concepts still apply.

Note that the Breadcrumbs are somewhat incorrect in the video. This was due to an oversight in creating the view. If the view included a "Page Title" or used the "Page Title" field for the Arguments.

Am requiring something similar but using the date field (Date module) that a user specifies instead of when the content was created. This is for an event archive, where it's obviously more relevant to archive by the actual event date.

For Drupal 6.x the blog module will not allow views to override the "/blog" path so you cannot create the archive list as show. Advice given to em was to not use the blog module and just use content types with views to create a blog.
