In 6.x IA is not attaching the images. There are no error messages.

I have the same problem and no image is even created in my case.
A fresh Drupal 6.2
Image 6.x-1.0-alpha1

The update of the node just works and no errors are reported or logged.

same here
was working ok before upgrading to 6.2 and prev module version
after upgrade no longer
nothing reported, no error messages
just doesnt upload
