In the latest version, when setting up a gProximity profile (at admin/build/gproximity/add ), the Latitude and Longitude drop-downs (where you select the lat and long fields you defined in your View - the help text reads "Set fields for markers latitude and longitude.") are not marked as being required (no red asterisk).

This is in the 4-12 version of dev:
