Except for the admin, nobody can click the thumbnails on nodes to see a sized image.
Not even when someone has the "view original images" permission.

An old bug which has hit _very_ few: there's a conflict with core upload. What happens if you disable that?

Disabling core upload didn't do the trick but I've applied the patch from the link drewish provided and now it's working.
