I have a few hundred categories. Before I write categories descriptions for all of them, can someone tell me what the category descriptions are used for?
Are they just for backend use, or do they appear in the frontend.

To give an idea what they are about when clicked
I wondered if they were useful either. But when you click on a page above it in nav it tends to show the descriptions of each subcategory. I don't bother labeling everything just the main things usually. I think the odd thing is a given and doesn't really need described. An example is what's the point of me describing appetizers in my recipe book? I'm sure people know what an appetizer or soup is. Yet for other book pages of books I've created depending on what it is it might be worth an explaination on it.
so you dont know either?
so you dont know either?
Well yes I do and did say.
Well yes I do and did say. If you click a main category and a description has been given to one of the sub categories it shows up in an index page of sorts. Much like when you first view the main forum page. You see forum descriptions here. That is basically all it does. Though for somethings it's pointless to really bother giving them a description.(ie categories in the recipe book for example)
I have a base drupal install
I have a base drupal install and mine doesnt do that. Do you have a special module?
I've got several modules
I just piped output of an ls then skimmed off the .modules and here's a list:
adminblock, adsense, ajax, album, article, attachment, blogtheme, bookreview, buddylist, chatbox, commentcloser, creativecommons, currency, customerror, daily, diff, download_counter, feedback, filemanager, filestore2, flexinode, folksonomy, fontsize,
fscache, glossary, fontsize, fscache, glossary, fine, hof, htmlcorrector, image, image_filter, indexpage, legal, members, menu_otf, node_privacy_byrole, notify, paypal_framework, paypal_tipjar, poormanscron, privatemsg, quote, quotes, site_map, spam, subscriptions. survey, syndication, taxonomy_access, taxonomy_block, taxonomy_browser, taxonomy_context, taxonomy_dhtml, taxonomy_menu, taxonomy_multi_edit, theme_editor, trip_search, troll, vimcolor, and workspace.
Also:
cafepress <- seems to work but I have to configure it
guestbook <- you have to remove one bit of code and replace it with a space but works
im <- it needs one thing changed in the module but otherwise works fine
img_assist <- works fine unless you want to import an image into a page(filed a bug report)
recipe <- cvs version which now works great even on php 4 :)
smileys <- I have to make some smily themes so haven't really tried it
statistics_filter <- has some issues/error messages if you tell it to log browsers
Not every module is activated. I think 4 are shut off for now.
Oh and I had tried fsckeditor and it's nice but personally I found it a little slow. And this is just a personal/hobby site if you will that I'm running. Oh and one of those modules might be messing with my ability to upload gz's and bz2's. I have added their file type but it's still just not working so I've done a bit of a work around for the time being.
darn it it didn't post it full
continued from last post. It seems it doesn't like me using angle brackets even if it's a singular.

Index page?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK the taxonomy module doesn't produce any 'index pages' for parent categories. If you see a list of subcategories when you go to a parent category's page, then you must be using an extra module.
Just curious, what module are you using?

I'm using a few different ones
I have several but not all of the taxonomy. But I also have menu on the fly, article, and index. Index is a bit different as it actually has it's own seperate link with index pages below it. I just nuked my categories I was using in my book now that I have more of a feel for how to use the book feature. But I know with forums it displayed descriptions of them. When the main forum link was clicked. If that has to do with another module I'm installed then my guess is the category descriptions are simply for the admins own refrence when adding or editing.
